A POPULAR barman, who spent 40 years pulling pints in Ahernes Pub in Old Bawn, has been remembered as a well-liked man with an enduring interest in sports, following his sudden passing earlier this month at the age of 70, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.
Pat Benton, who was originally from Meath but lived in Mountain Park in Tallaght, was a familiar face to Ahernes’ regulars.

He first started working in the pub in 1972 and built up a strong rapport with his colleagues and with customers during his time there.
Pat retired in 2012 and was given a good send-off from his colleagues where he expressed his intention to play more pitch and putt during his retirement.
Andy Aherne, the owner of Ahernes, told The Echo: “Pat liked the bar work, and he got on very well with staff, management and customers.
Very popular
“He was very popular, and we always found him to be honest, reliable and hardworking.
“We were all stunned and upset when we heard that he had passed away.”
Pat passed away unexpectedly in Tallaght Hospital on March 8, and is survived by his wife Eilish, his daughters Karen and Louise, and his grandchildren Darragh and Éabha.
Pat was buried in Bohernabreena Cemetery following a funeral mass in St Dominic’s Church on March 15.
