Harrington has to settle for silver

KELLIE Harrington had to settle for silver at the Nicolae Linca Golden Belt in Romania after losing out on a controversial split decision against Julia Tsyplakova in the lightweight decider.

In what was viewed in many quarters as a bad decision, the St Mary’s boxer emerged on the wrong side of a 3-2 result after having cruised past the challenge of Serbia’s Jelena Jelic in the penultimate rounds.

Speaking about the fight, St Mary’s Coach, Noel Burke said: “I saw the final and really she [Harrington] won it quite comfortably without even getting out of second gear.

“How they gave that decision was laughable, but look, this was just part of her preparation for the World Championships.

“She wanted to get in two good fights and she did that. There was nothing she could do about that decision. It was nothing to do with her performance,” he said

In all, the Ireland squad took home a haul of 12 medals from this tournament, including four gold won by Joe Ward, Michaela Walsh, Gráinne Walsh and Aoife O’Rourke.

Harrington, who took bronze at this year’s Europeans in Bulgaria earlier this year, will soon be back in training before heading to Germany for a camp ahead of the World Championships.
