Help on hand to QUIT smoking

Smokers of all ages in the South County Dublin Council area should take up free personal supports being offered to help them quit in 2018, according to local TD and Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone.

The Minister is also asking for all public offices in Rathfarnham, Tallaght and other communities to raise awareness about the help available through QUIT.ie as well as local support groups.

She says smoking remains one of the biggest threats to health and those who want to give up should be supported.

Minister Zappone added:  “New Year, Ash Wednesday and Lent are when most people attempt to quit smoking.

“It is not easy. Smokers need the support of family, friends and the state agencies promoting health during this time.

“It is important that libraries, council offices, GP surgeries, health and community centres in Tallaght, Rathfarnham, Citywest and throughout the South Dublin County Council area are used to get the message out that help is at hand.

“Already since the start of the year 1,500 people have signed up to QUIT.ie. These smokers of all ages are twice as likely to succeed as those who attempt to go it alone.

“Smokers are offered practical advice as well as information on a special helpline 1800 201 203, details of social media accounts and local support groups.

“There are now more quitters than smokers in our country – and that is evident in our local communities. Having said that there are still many people who for a variety of reasons, including stress, feel they cannot get through the day without cigarettes.

“Past experience has told us that lecturing or preaching to smokers simply does not work. The supportive approach now being offered is having greater success.

“It is expected that during 2018 a further 30,000 people will attempt to stub out the habit and improve their health. If you are a smoker or have a family member or friend trying to quit – please let them know that help is at hand.”
