Heritage Group to host special 20 year celebration

IT IS 20 years since Ballyfermot Heritage Group was established and on Saturday, August 19, they will celebrate a special anniversary at Ballyfermot Library for Ballyfermot Heritage Day.

The festivities kick off at 10am with the Ballyer Trad Hub performing some classic hits, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin will arrive at 11.30am to launch the group’s new walking trail map and guide.

The event takes place during the National Heritage Week. Dublin City Council and Ballyfermot Heritage Group have worked together to complete the design of the heritage walking trail map, and some 2,000 copies were printed in early June.

The next steps of the project involved the installation of a sign notice board displaying the heritage trail map along the main thoroughfare in Ballyfermot.

It will also see the production of a historical audit, something which attendees at the launch of Crumlin Walking Trail Map and Guide in January agreed was a fantastic booklet.

Established in 2003, Ballyfermot Heritage Group includes a dedicated group of local residents, committed to capturing significant images of events and people in the area.

They also document historical pictures and stories from the 1950s onwards, many of which are enjoyed by a massive diaspora living abroad.

Ken Larkin, Ballyfermot Heritage Group, said: “Rodney Oglesby who wrote a song for the diaspora, will sing it on the day.

“We also have some members of the Doyle/Halpin School of Irish Dancing and Steven Barrett will finish off with a sing song.

“Also on display will be old photos and memorabilia and video recordings.”

Visitors attending during the day can enjoy tea, coffee and refreshments.
