IF YOU WERE passing Firhouse Community College on Friday night, you could be for given for thinking that the Irish rugby were playing inside such was the quality of Ireland’s Call coming from the hall.
The Firhouse Singers, the Teamchor Jona from Switzerland, the Firhouse Community College Choir and the Maria Lane Choir (under the auspices of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group) together gave a rousing rendition of “Ireland’s Call” to finish their charity concert.
Margaret Dennehy from the Tallaght Cancer Support Group told The Echo: “The four choirs together singing Ireland’s Call really raised the roof. It was magnificent.”
The concert marked the launch of The Maria Lane Choir (under the auspices of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group). The choir is named after Maria Lane, a member of the support group who passed away last January.
Margaret Dennehy told The Echo: “Maria was a member of our group who always wanted to set up a choir. As Maria passed away earlier this year, we decided to found the choir in Maria’s honour.”
On the night – which was hosted by the Firhouse Singers – there was a 50-strong choir from Switzerland, the Teamchor Jona, The Firhouse Community College Choir and the Maria Lane Choir. The programme for the evening included all types of songs from gospel to ballads.
The Maria Lane Choir were led by their choirmaster, Derek Moylan. Margaret Dennehy paid particular tribute to Derek. She said: “Derek is newly qualified. He is absolutely unstinting with his talent and generosity”.
All proceeds from the concert went to the Tallaght Cancer Support Group and The Web Project.
The choir currently have 20 members. It is open to all and they are looking for new members. They meet every Thursday in Rua Red in Tallaght from 11am to 1pm. If you are interested in joining the choir, you can contact the choir at 086 400 2736 or 086 400 2703.
