11 horses seized in the Lucan area in 12 days

SOUTH DUBLIN County Council seized 11 horses in Palmerstown, Lucan and Adamstown during the first 12 days of 2018, the Lucan area committee of SDCC heard this week, reports Brendan Grehan.
Councillor Guss O’Connell had tabled a question asking the Chief Executive “if there has been any horses reported as being abused, strayed or otherwise come to the attention of the Council in the Lucan, Palmerstown, Adamstown Area over the past three months and if yes, what action has been taken and with what results?"
The Council said that all seized horses are taken to the horse pound where they are microchipped (if not already microchipped) and examined by a vet.
Horses which are unsuitable for re-homing or not reclaimed by their owners within a period of five days from the date of seizure and detention the Council (or Garda Superintendent) may dispose of by way of sale, animal euthanasia or re-homing.
The Council said that in relation to they areas specified by Cllr O’Connell, there were two horses seized, one in Moyglas, Lucan and one on the Newcastle Road in the period October to December 2017.
In the areas specified from January 1 to January 12 2018, 11 horses have been seized, two in Tór an Rí, three at Hazelhatch and six on Newcastle Road at 12th Lock.
There were seven non-seizures during October to December 2017 (sightings of horses reported but not there when contractor arrives on site).
The Council said that there have been no direct reports of abuse made to SDCC but they work closely with the DSPCA in monitoring horses within South County Dublin.
One deceased horse was removed by Public Realm from Tór an Rí, Lucan in January.
