Hospital Heroes Award

Hospital Heroes Award

By Mary Dennehy

TALLAGHT University Hospital is calling on the local community to celebrate and nominate staff members who have went that extra mile in caring for patients and their families.

For the past three years, Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) has been running its Heroes Awards, an annual employee recognition scheme.

The programme celebrates the individuals and teams that go that extra mile, making a real difference to patients and their families, providing ‘exceptional patient experience’.

TUH is inviting the community to once again get behind the scheme’s Patient Experience Award, and nominate someone who made a real difference during their or a family member’s time in the local hospital.

The awards scheme, which is a little later this year due to the arrival of Covid-19, received hundreds of Patient Experience Award nominations in 2019, with the hospital hoping to build on that success this year.

According to Lucy Nugent, Chief Executive of TUH: “The awards are a highlight of the hospital calendar each year.

“The outbreak of Covid-19 and minimising the disruption to the hospital in providing care at a challenging time was a priority and we now need to get back to the ‘new normal’.

“I am sure our award ceremony will look quite different this year but I still think it is important to take some time to recognise and acknowledge the dedicated and hard-working staff who contribute so much.

“The Patient Experience Award is particularly important for our staff as the nominations come from the patient.”

Catherine Heaney, Co-ordinator of the Fettercairn Community Health Project and Chair of the Patient Community Advisory Council, represents the community on the judging panel.

“At what is an incredibly busy time for the hospital I am delighted they are making the time to ensure this annual scheme goes ahead”, Ms Heaney said.

“Covid-19 has taken so many events from our calendars I think it is now more important than ever to make sure that we support our local hospital and recognise the incredible efforts staff across the hospital go to in caring for their patients but also one another.

“In recent months staff have continued to work and care for patients despite the threat of the virus but the awards are about more than Covid it is about the service that staff provide day in, day out, year in year out.

“I am hopeful that patients and their families will take a few minutes to put pen to paper, or fingers to the keyboard to let the judging panel know the positive difference a staff member made to their patient experience.”

Application forms for members of the public are available on www.tuh.ie.

Nomination forms can be emailed to TallaghtHeroes@tuh.ie or printed out and sent by post to TUH 2020 Heroes Entries, C/O The Human Resources Department, Tallaght University Hospital, Dublin 24.

Members of the public can also fill out the nomination form on this page of The Echo Newspaper, cut it out and post to Tallaght University Hospital.

The closing date for submissions is June 29, with judging taking place in July.

An awards ceremony will take place later this year.

CEO Lucy Nugent encourages members of the community to nominate their Hospital Hero

‘The TUH Heroes programme is a chance to celebrate staff from across the hospital, not just the doctors and nurses who care for patients.

The Patient Experience award is for a staff member that supports the Hospital ethos of People Caring for People to Live Better Lives.

On behalf of the Hospital, I would like to ask you to nominate a member of staff who made a real difference during your time in the hospital.

A person that showed to you or your family member they did that one extra kind thing that put themselves in your shoes.

A person that went beyond what you would expect in your care or what a family member expected, delivering an ‘exceptional patient experience’.
