Hospital launches third ‘hackathon’ for students

TALLAGHT University Hospital (TUH) this week launched its third ‘health hackathon’, which sees students from TU Dublin working together to solve challenges set by TUH clinicians.

At the launch last Tuesday, July 25, it was announced that this year’s hackathon will take place on September 22 and 23 and will put the groups of students through their paces.

Each project group will be assigned challenges and will be given time with the clinicians so they can ask more detailed questions.

There are four award categories this year under which the winning projects will be selected, including Innovation with Greatest Potential, Best Use of Technology, Innovation with Greatest Patient Benefit, and Most Innovative Solution.

Seán McHugh, Head of Discipline at the School of Enterprise Computing and Digital Transformation at TU Dublin, said the hackathon offers students the opportunity to apply innovation to healthcare.

“Students have the opportunity to work together to unlock the potential of healthcare’s future, where their fresh innovation mind-sets and perspectives collaborate to create digital transformation,” he said, “and ‘tech for good’ solutions for real-world impact to current healthcare and societal challenges.”

The CEO of TUH, Lucy Nugent, voiced her support for the hackathon and added that it’s an event she looks forward to and enjoys every year.

“I cannot wait for this event, each year the students and their suggestions are so well thought-out and articulated,” she said.

“I leave the event having learnt something each year and [I’m] excited as to how the projects can be implemented in TUH but also benefit wider healthcare settings.”

The health hackathon is a collaborative event between TUH and TU Dublin and is supported by Amazon Web Services.
