Hospital to get new modern front entrance
By Mary Dennehy
TALLAGHT Hospital is hoping to face the future with a new, modern front entrance, which will reflect the “evolution and ethos” of the local health facility as a large teaching and community hospital.
Over the past year, Tallaght Hospital management has been working on a number of proposals to help build capacity at the local hospital.
The hospital has a number of major capital projects at varying stages, which all works towards maximising accessibility and patient experience in the years to come.
Some of the projects include, a new two-storey renal building which, due to commence in January 2018, will increase the hospital’s dialysis stations from 14 to 28.
Proposals to increase the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit are at planning stage while a site has been identified on campus for the development of a six-storey, 72-single room development – which management hopes will receive HSE support.
In December, Tallaght Hospital lodged a planning application with South Dublin County Council for the construction of a new entrance lobby and concourse, which will include a new information desk, informal seating and display facilities.
The existing lobby will be removed to pave the way for a new 6m high concourse which will extend from new entrance doors into the existing 4-storey high atrium.
In a statement to The Echo, Tallaght Hospital said: “Tallaght Hospital recently submitted planning permission to South Dublin County Council in order to enhance the entrance to the main hospital with a new, modern design.
“The current design dates back some 30 years and is no longer fit for purpose. With the planned construction of the Paediatric Urgent Care Centre adjacent to the main entrance.
“The new entrance space will integrate into the existing arrival space and central atrium and will provide an area for public display where informal seating will be available and a welcome desk.”
The statement continued: “The new development will reflect the evolution and ethos of Tallaght Hospital as a large teaching and community hospital.
“The proposed project will help to improve the public campus for the benefit of patients, visitors and staff.”
The planning application also provides for landscaping work, paving and a sign above the new entrance lobby doors.
The council’s decision is due by February 6.
