Hyland and Coyne named in Euro SC C’ship squad

TALLAGHT and National Centre swimmers Brendan Hyland and Niamh Coyne have been named in the 11-strong senior squad that will compete in the 2019 LEN European Short Course Championships in Glasgow from December 4-8.

Hyland was one of the stars for Ireland at the FINA World Champion-ships in South Korea this summer after he smashed his Irish 200m Butterfly record with a time of 1:56.55 that was fractionally outside the Olympic Games qualifying standard and saw him finished 11th overall in the competition.

The Swim Ireland Swimmer of the Year was also part of both the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley teams that set new national bests.

Hyland has been a very consistent performer this year with three gold medals and two Irish senior records bagged in the 2019 Irish Open Swimming Champion-ships in March seeing him back among the contenders for ‘The Echo 2019 Amateur Sports Star of the Year’ Award.

Youth Olympic Games silver medallist in the 100m Breaststroke, Niamh Coyne also got a taste of World Senior Championship action this year, contesting the 100m and 200m Breaststroke.

Looking ahead to the Euros in Glasgow, National Performance Director Jon Rudd said “This event always helps athletes to gain some clarity on how their season is progressing towards the following summer, and we all know that our Trials in April and the summer of 2020 have an extra importance this season.”
