Hyland makes it a double at Irish Open Championship

BRENDAN Hyland was again on fire at the Irish Open Swimming Championships at the NAC last weekend.

The 22-year-old National Centre Dublin (NCD) and Tallaght swimmer, set new Irish records in both the 100m and 200m Butterfly, subsequently earning consideration times for this summer’s European Games in Glasgow.

In the latter, he broke his own record of 1:58.08 by more than half a second, clocking 1:57.44 to win his sixth consecutive 200m Butterfly title.

"When I sat down with my coach Ben [Higson] at the start of the season, he asked me what I thought success would be this year and I said going 1.57 low. We’re there now and we’re only one cycle in to the season,” said Hyland.

Hyland, who had previously set a new PB of 50.42 in the 100m Free-style in what was his opening event of the competition, followed up his 200m Fly record with another over half that distance.

Again he smashed his own national record, taking .64 off the 2017 standard (53.26), as he dipped below 53 seconds for the first time with a 52.62 that saw him win the Irish title for the seventh year in succession.

“I was very happy with my performances. It’s good to see everything coming together,” he said

“With new coaches and new training structure, it’s great to be getting results.”

Hyland, who won silver in the 100m Fly at the Edinburgh International and two gold at the Dave McCullagh meet earlier in the year, hopes to map out an official schedule for the coming season over the next couple of weeks.
