PEAMOUNT United Women’s team manager, James O’Callaghan, believes Aine O’Gorman’s retirement from international football represents a huge loss to Ireland.

Continuing to play with Peamount, whom she helped to the Women’s National League Cup after scoring in their 2-1 win over Wexford in Saturday’s final, O’Gorman has earned 100 caps and scored 13 goals in her 12 years as a senior international footballer.

“I think Aine is a big loss to the Ireland international squad,” O’Callaghan told The Echo.

“I thought she had a couple of seasons left in her, but she wants to concentrate on her club football and coaching.

“She’s a phenomenal player and a true role model for the young players in our club.

“She probably works harder than any other player, and this is someone who’s got 100 caps. It’s great that we have her at Peamount.

“In the men’s game she’d be world famous and a multi-millionaire, but unfortunately the women’s game doesn’t get the same recognition,” he sighed.

O’Gorman made her international debut in the 2006 Algarve Cup against Denmark at the age of 16 and received her Golden Cap following her 100th appearance in a match against Norway in June.
