Joy for Joseph’s and Finian’s in Croker showdown

THERE was delight for St Joseph’s BNS school on Tuesday when they secured the Cumann na mBunscol John Nagle title after beating Gaelscoil Míde, Cill Bharróg 2-11 to 2-7 in Croke Park on Tuesday.

The Clondalkin outfit put together a strong second half performance as they came from three points down at half time to secure a dramatic victory.

Goals from Caleb McClelland and Josh Ennis set Joseph’s on their way to what was a fantastic result for the team.

After the match, the school dedicated the victory to legendary teacher John FitzGerald who is leaving the school after 38 years this Friday.

Harry Fogarty was another player that impressed for Joseph’s kicking three points while Aaron Keegan and Max Kelly got on the scoreboard.

Elsewhere, St Pius BNS were edged out by Belgrove BNS from Clontarf 1-11 to 1-12 in the Corn Kitterick decider.

Matt Broderick was in superb form between the posts for St Pius pulling of five fine saves while Daire Fennell and Adam Walsh worked hard in midfield scoring two points and three points respectively.

Fennell was indeed unlucky not to score a goal in the last minute when his shot went over the bar.

Billy O’Donovan at corner forward scored a lovely point from his left boot while captain Billy Lappin at full forward scored a goal and point while Ronan Kealy pushed forward from defence to register four pointed frees.

Others to impress for St Pius were Donnacha Cronin, Alfie McCabe and Odhran Jones but it was not to be there day as Belgrove edged this contest.

Meanwhile, St Finian’s PS in Newcastle won their first girls Cumann na mBunscol crown when they overcame St Benedict’s from Ongar 2-6 to 0-3 in the Pat Fogarty showdown.

It was 0-2 to 0-1 in favour of Finian’s at half time but they turned on the style in the second half with two goals and four points.

Finian’s goals came from Isabelle Trinkunaite and Sadhbh in the second half while they had many heroes on the day including Clodagh Foley at centre back and Reiltin Byrne at wing back.

Saoirse Dowling at corner back impressed for the Newcastle school with two impressive blocks while Lucie Delaney covered every blade of grass in midfield.

Alannah Brady kicked an inspirational score in the second half as Finian’s went on to win the title in style.

Elsewhere, Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, Inchicore played Castleknock ETNS in the Corn an Chladaigh girls football final.

The Inchicore side put in a brave performance with Lilly Kenny, Madison McKenzie, Masison Kenny playing well in the forward line.

Ynez in midfield worked hard for Scxoil Mhuire and was well-supported by Adele O’Connor and Ellie Mae Heneghan.

Lily Kenny scored two goals and a point for Scoil Mhuire while Madison McKenzie scored a goal and a point.
