Joy for Jude’s in final

ST JUDE’S captured their very first Senior One Camogie Championship title following a 0-15 to 1-9 triumph over Na Fianna in St Peregrine’s GAA Club on Sunday.

It was a titanic battle between these two sides as an end-to-end first half saw Jude’s carve out a two point lead by the break.

Niamh Rock drew first blood for Na Fianna before Jude’s responded with five unanswered points, Niamh Gannon, Carah Dawson, Hannah Begley and Sinead Nolan all shooting over.

The Glasnevin outfit, however, stayed well in touch thanks to scores from Rock and Orla Gray although Jude’s had the chance to open up another gap but Faye McCarthy’s late first half penalty was saved.

Carrying a two-point lead into the second half, Jude’s were pegged back with points from Zoe O’Donoghue and Emma Deeley.

They managed to re-open a three-point gap only to see Na Fianna restore parity by way of an Elaine O’Meara goal and they continued to reel the Templeogue side back in every time they got their nose in front, eventually forcing extra time after the match ended deadlocked at 0-11 to 1-8.

While it was Na Fianna who edged ahead early on in this period it was Jude’s who took command, with points from Nolan, Dawson and Aoife Walsh seeing them go two clear by the midway point.

And they managed to remain out of reach to secure their very first Senior One Club Championship title.

St Judes will now play Thomastown in the Leinster Senior Camogie Championship Semi-Final, taking place in Kilkenny on Sunday.

Looking ahead to this test, Jude’s goalkeeper Faye McCarthy said “We have 10 county players, four of us from the seniors but we’ve got a huge chall-enge now in Thomastown.

“Winning the county final was huge so we’re just taking this as the icing on the cake. As big as the match is we’re not going to let it get to us, just go out and enjoy it and use the opportunity to show how we’ve been playing all year.

“We had no nerves in the county final. Even if we are nervous we take a second to think about what we have to do so hopefully that will help us,” she said.
