Jude’s on brink of camogie double

ST JUDE’S are gearing up for a big weekend on the camogie front after both their Senior and Junior teams reached their respective championship deciders following semi finals wins on Sunday.

While the club’s Seniors beat Lucan Sarsfields 1-7 to 0-17, their Juniors proved too strong for Good Counsel, winning out 3-8 to 1-0.

The former raced into a five point advantage by the halftime break in the respective last-four fixture, Sinead Nolan keeping them ticking over with some consistent free-taking while Niamh Gannon also tagged on scores.

Lucan did threaten with a somewhat fortuitous goal in the second half that saw goalkeeper Fay McCarty inadvertently knock the ball into her own net as she attempted to stop a long range effort going over.

But the Sarsfields netminder ignited an immediate response when her long puc down the field towards Gannon saw the latter fouled and Nolan converted the resulting free before they continued on to secure their place in the final which will see them take on Na Fianna this coming Sunday.

Delighted with the performance of his players, St Jude’s manager Donie Fox said: “This was probably their best performance to date.

“The team has been steadily improving, learning that bit more with every game and this performance was coming.

“They’re a very motivated bunch and very easy to coach and it would be great to see to them win this weekend,” he added.

Jude’s will also be looking forward to the Junior Championship showpiece in which they will face off against Commercials in Abbottstown on Sunday.

The Templeogue side cruised past Good Counsel in the last four on Sunday in Tymon Park with goals from Deirdre Joyce and Clare Nugent, together with points from Tara Corrigan and Ava Lewis, going a long way to seeing them over this hurdle.

At the other end of the pitch, centre half back Ruth Hyland and full back Fiona Guckian turned in stand-out displays in defence.

Now on the brink of some champ-ionship silverware, this Jude’s team is relishing this campaign even more given that it is their first year together.

Set up by Sarah Fallon and Una Mangan with former Jude’s Senior Hurling team boss Sean Fallon brought in as manager, this team lost every one of their league games in Division Five, but have enjoyed a much better run after being regraded for the Junior Championship.
