Juggernaut: Classic drama comes to St Enda’s Pearse Museum

Balally Players Theatre Company is set to bring back to life the classic drama `Juggernaut´ at An Hall Mór, St Enda’s Pearse Museum, on Saturday, September 30, at 2.30pm, offering audiences a glimpse into the era of the War of Independence, writes Chiara-Lian Gruschke.

This acclaimed play, originally staged in 1929, explores the intricate emotions of a middle-class family thrust into the turmoil of the time when they offer shelter to an injured Irish rebel.

Written by David Sears, this 90-minute production weaves a story of forbidden love and imminent danger as the household’s daughter falls for a British Army officer, unaware that his life hangs in the balance with critical information coveted by the IRA.

`Juggernaut´promises a captivating experience, drawing inspiration from celebrated playwrights like Noel Coward and R.C. Sherriff, while also shining a light on a lesser-known gem of the War of Independence era.

Originally presented by the Gate Theatre in 1929, with Hilton Edwards and Michael MacLiammor in the lead roles, the play now takes centre stage in the Balally Players’ repertoire. Chairman Patrick Hand expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to bring ‘Juggernaut’ to life on stage. By immersing the audience in the midst of the War of Independence, we hope to challenge their perspectives and offer a deep exploration of loyalty, love, and the human condition amidst conflict.”

There are three key elements that come together to create the theatrical experience in `Juggernaut’: Firstly, the production offers a meticulously recreated setting, evoking the atmosphere of Killiney during the War of Independence, and providing the audience with a rich historical backdrop.

Furthermore, the engaging narrative delves into the disruptive impact of war on a middle-class family, shedding light on the human toll and wider consequences of conflict.

Additionally, the skillful portrayal of forbidden love and imminent danger creates a gripping and emotionally charged atmosphere, immersing viewers in the characters’ challenges and emotions.

`Juggernaut´ promises to deliver an exceptional theatre experience, challenging perceptions and highlighting the enduring strength of love and loyalty during challenging times.

Catch `Juggernaut´ also at the Mill Theatre Studio on Friday, October 6, and Saturday, October 7, at 7.30pm.
