Just 10 social housing homes to be delivered by SDCC this year

A total of only 10 social housing homes will be delivered by South Dublin County Council by the end of this year, according to information given by the council management team to Oireachtas members at a meeting last month.

The council estimates that it will complete approximately 350 social housing units next year, while only 10 social housing homes will be completed by the end of 2017.

Dublin South West Fianna Fáil TD John Lahart told The Echo: “This is truly shocking and an indictment of the ability of the Department to turn around projects once approved by councillors.

“One of the last Part 8 projects I voted on as a councillor was to approve a scheme for close to 40 social houses and that was in October/November 2015.

“The sod has yet to be turned on this project and it has spent an inordinate amount of time awaiting approval from the Department.

“The Council anticipates completions in or around 350 social units next year but, from experience, I expect the total to fall short of that also.

“With the housing list increasing and homelessness failing to abate, constructing 300-400 social homes a year will not cut the mustard.”

The TD added: “Completing just ten homes is a catastrophe.”

When contacted by The Echo for comment, the council did not respond to a request for confirmation of the number of social housing homes that were completed this year.

A spokesperson for the council said: “It was stated at the meeting that currently on-site we have three projects: St Mark’s Green, Mayfield, MacUilliam and Dromcarra, [providing] 71 units.

“In addition, starts are imminent at Neilstown, Ballyboden and Killinarden, [providing] 104 units.

“Rapid Build Programmes at the following: St Aidan’s, which is about to start [will provide] 91 Units;  Firhouse, and St Cuthbert’s are Part 8 approved and about to go to tender; and Old-castle, which is at design stage.”
