Keogh hitting new heights for Dubs
THOMAS DAVIS star Davy Keogh is mounting a serious argument for a starting position with Dublin hurlers over the 2020 season after putting together a string of commanding performances in the Walsh Cup.
Mattie Kenny’s side will tog out at Parnell Park on tonight (Thursday) for their rescheduled bout with Laois and victory will see them through to the semi-final on Sunday.
Davy Keogh.
Keogh is among a string of local players who have burst on to the inter-county scene in recent years with the midfielder starring for the Under 20 side in 2019 while Round Towers starlet Alex O’Neill has made two appearances off the bench this season.
O’Neill was a starter in the famous gunslinging Leinster Minor Hurling Championship Final in 2018 that saw Dublin dethrone holders Kilkenny following a 6-19 to 7-12 win.
Last Sunday in Parnell Park, Alex O’Neill came in at half-forward on 52 minutes and put on a sturdy display as Dublin beat Carlow 3-20 to 0-18 in the Walsh Cup, demonstrating eagerness to find space and even chipp-ing in with a point.
Keogh was in flying-form with his direct running from midfield causing the Carlow backline a lot of trouble, taking a point from play and assisting Eamonn Dillon’s second goal in the first half.
Ballyboden forward, Paul Ryan, displayed laser-like accuracy from frees in the 22 minutes he was on the field before picking up an injury while his clubmates Luke Corcoran and James Madden proved solid in the full-back line.
Brother of captain Chris Crummey, Paul, of Lucan Sarsfields was strong at half-back and will be looking to bring that physicality into Thursday night’s final round of group games.
All Dublin need to do to confirm their spot in the semi-final against Galway on Sunday is avoid losing by more than 12 points on Thursday.
