By Leopold Herter
AFTER the tragic death of Ballyfermot’s Kevin Kenny, his family and former football club, Landen United, created the Kevin Kenny Memorial Match, a game held annually to remember the former electrician.
His family and friends were distraught when he died tragically in 2011 at the age of 30 following a stabbing on Sarsfield Road, Ballyfermot.

To remember Kevin, his family and friends meet up around Christmastime and play a game for the Memorial Cup.
The 2019 match took place on Sunday, December 29 at Markievicz Park in Ballyfermot with friends of Kevin facing former Landen players.
The yearly happening is “a tribute to Kevin”, according to his brother Stephen.
He and his family are deeply thankful to all the people who turn up annually and use the opportunity to think about Kevin.
This year’s outing of the Kevin Kenny select 11 against Landen United select 11 turned out to be a thriller, full of fast-paced action and plenty of opportunities, where both sides showed their competitive spirit.
In the end, Landen won 4-3 and took the Memorial Cup of 2019 home, with Lennon Shannon named Man of the Match.
The two teams that took part
After the football match those involved gathered at the Pigeon Club on Lally Road for food and an evening of music and fun.
Stephen said; “Thanks to Bosch, Seanie Finlan, and especially Paul Mooney, who did a lot of work and to everyone who took part.
“Thanks to the management and staff of the Pigeon Club, and to referee Willie Shannon.”
