Kick cancer in the butt

A FUNDRAISING event for Our Lady’s Hospice, called Kick Cancer in the Butt, will be held in the Citywest Hotel this Saturday, July 20, in memory of Clondalkin woman Geraldine Galvin, who passed away in 2014 at 45 years old.
Features of the event will include a pitch and putt tournament at 11.30am, costing €15 per person, a mini triathlon, consisting of a 5k walk or run, 5k on a spin bike and swimming ten lengths, and a golf day, with a team of four costing €100.

The fundraising day will end with a celebration night in the hotel at 8pm that evening, with admission costing €10, and there will be a monster raffle and entertainment.
The event is now in its fifth year, with organiser Ruth Devoy having set up the event after her friend Geraldine passed away in 2014 after battling breast cancer.
Ruth told The Echo: “All monies raised goes to Our Lady’s Hospice in Harold’s Cross.
“We insist that the money goes into buying much-needed equipment for the patients.
“The reason for this was when Geraldine was sick she could never get a wheelchair, or if she did it was not the best, so her daughter had asked me could we not buy wheelchairs.

“So now the hospice sends us a wish list and we pick an item or two depending on what we have made.
“The main reason I can do what I do is because I work here in Citywest Hotel and they are my biggest sponsors. Without them my event would not be what it is . . . I am so grateful and lucky.
“We have raised just under €40,000 over the last five years, and would love to keep going for another five years.
“I would love to see the event grow and do even better than it has so far.”
All of the money raised from the event will go towards the purchase of much-needed equipment and the ongoing provision of services to all patients of Our Lady’s Hospice, in their own homes and within the hospice.
