Killinarden Shopping centre to undergo improvements

THE Killinarden shopping centre is expected to undergo a number of improvements, including the installation of CCTV, resurfacing of the car park and the repainting of buildings.
Over recent years, issues around the appearance of the Killinarden shopping area and the volume of litter in the vicinity have been raised.
Within the busy area is a community centre, a health centre, mixed use development with apartments, a public house, two fast food outlets, a supermarket, chemist, bookies, church, two national schools and a public park.
A lack of bins in the area has previously been raised as a contributing factor to litter issues.
However, according to the council, it has been “continuously advised” that in the past litter bins outside the shops were set alight – resulting in some of the businesses having bins inside their doors.
At the recent Tallaght Area Committee meeting, council management said that since the item was last discussed there has been considerable engagement between the local authority and the management company with responsibility for the shopping area – and also with the individual shop keepers.
According to the council: “The management company, in conjunction with the shops owners/occupiers are arranging litter collection in the area, and the occupiers of the individual premises are also required to clean the pavement adjoining their business.
“The council’s Warden Service has informed the shop owners/occupiers of their obligations in this regard.”
The council added: “The management company has most recently informed the council of progress made with the shop owners on proposed aesthetic improvement works for the area which include CCTV installation, resurfacing of the car park and repainting of buildings.
“The works are due to commence within the next month subject to agreed costs.
“The Litter Warden patrols this area on a daily basis and to date has reported significant improvements in the area – there is no litter, grass was cut and the drains were being cleansed prior to resurfacing works.”
Photographs of the shopping centre, which were taken over a three week period, were presented to councillors at the Tallaght Area Committee meeting, and they show an improvement in the appearance of the area.
