By Maurice Garvey
BALLYFERMOT Library hosted an event on Saturday to commemorate National Heritage Week (August 18-26) and celebrate the area’s 70-year anniversary.
The event was organised by the Ballyfermot St Mark’s Heritage Group, and saw an array of speakers, performers, musicians, special presentation and historical images on display.

Many of the photos on display were over 70 years old – which was in line with the theme of Ballyfermot celebrating its 70-year anniversary.
Ken Larkin, Ballyfermot Heritage Group said: “We had a great Heritage day on Saturday and made three presentations – one to Una Gomez (Chief Librarian), one to Sean Brennan (Ballyfermot Heritage Group), who is 70 this year and was born and bred here in Ballyfermot.
“We also did a presentation to the Beermats who are 25 years going this year and have played all around Europe and in the United States and are great ambassadors for Ballyfermot.”
He continued: “On behalf of Ballyfermot Heritage Group we would like to thank Derek Keating, Davey Inthevalley, Matt Dodd, Barney Bowes, Kevin O’Driscoll, Stephen Sutcliffe, Derek Copley, Aisling Keogh, Darren Lynch, Paddy Abbey, Brother Eugene and the De La Salle Boys Band. Congratulations to the Beermats as they are 25 years playing their music all over Europe and the United States, and all the lads are great ambassadors for Ballyfermot. Thanks to Una Gomez and all the staff in Ballyfermot Library. Without you all we could not have achieved the great day we had.”
