Local Faces – Claire Sherry

Claire Sherry has been volunteering with Clondalkin Animal Aid since 1991, and spends her day rescuing and rehoming animals.

The Echo met Claire and some of her dogs at her home in Clondalkin, where she’s been living for the past 40 years.

Every day for me is different.

I could have a list of things to do but my day is dependent on the number of calls we get. 

Some days we might be quiet enough and other days, we’re run off our feet.

We don’t have a premises so are reliant on foster homes and sometimes, if we’re really busy, we have to use private kennels.

At the moment we are caring for around 25 dogs, cats and kittens.

We mainly get calls from the Tallaght, Clondalkin and Lucan areas but people sometimes get in touch from further afield, and we always do what we can to help.

Each day I try to make a difference by reuniting lost animals with their owners or rescuing injured or abandoned animals and getting them the vetinary care they need.  

It can be distressing work if we are dealing with animals that are badly injured or neglected but mostly, it is very rewarding – especially when you find a loving home for an animal.

Clondalkin Animal Aid, which is dependant on fundraising and donations, is run by Claire and two other volunteers Rachel Johnson and Ann McDonnell – with support from a network of foster homes and the community. 

This Saturday (June 23), the animal aid is holding an adoption day in Newlands Garden Centre from 10.30am to 4pm.
