Local golfers set for major contests

ALEX Gleeson and Robert Moran from Rathfarnham’s Castle Golf Club, and Newland’s Cameron Raymond will soon be teeing off for Ireland, after having been selected in GUI squads.

It is a just reward for Gleeson that he will soon be strutting his stuff on the world-famous Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club following on from his impressive victories in the recent past.

The UCD student lifted the Leinster Youths title in 2014 and followed that in 2015 by defeating top-class international competition in winning the Boyd Quaich Tournament at St Andrews in Scotland.

His latest success saw him topping the leaderboard at the Irish Amateur Close Championship.

He is not the only Castle member who will be donning the Green for Ireland, with Moran selected in the GUI squad that will tee off at Copt Heath Golf Club, as Ireland de-fend the Peter McEvoy Trophy it won last year.

Moran was a winner with his dad in the All-Ireland Father and Son tournament in 2012, and finished second at the recent Irish Junior Cup played at Carton House,

He will be joined on the team by another local golfer, Newlands’ Cameron Raymond, who was the winner of the 2015 Leinster Boys Under 15 Amateur Open and finished second in that year’s Under 16 competition.
