Local theatre director and teacher Davey Kelleher has new Civic role

THE Civic Theatre in Tallaght has announced that their new artist in residence for the next 12 months is Davey Kelleher, local theatre director and teacher.

Davey, who lives in Rathfarnham, has always wanted to work in theatre, saying, “it was the only thing that excited me, even from a young age”.

He completed his bachelor’s in theatre in the drama department of Trinity College and his master’s at the Lir Academy of Dramatic Art.

He directed his first play in 2005 at age 17, and he says that is when “the directing seed got planted”; he has since worked on projects all over the world.

He told The Echo: “I think my biggest strength is my diversity of communication.

“Working in different situations have given my approach a certain universality.”

Davey will be working alongside Civic Theatre Artistic Director Michael Barker-Caven, who has spoken highly of him, saying, “I’m thrilled that Davey is coming on board at such a time of rich potential.

“He is a highly skilled and creative artist with a real eye for new talent and a hunger to see that talent flourish.”

Davey and Michael will make a number of changes; the main goal over the next year is to create a development hub for new and emerging local artists.

Davey also plans to draw on his experience teaching classes to host workshops at the Civic for those interested in getting involved in theatre.

He says that he is also planning on developing a new play for all ages about global politics, but that he could not provide any details as of yet.
