
Local women in squad to travel to World Cup finals in Australia
THE Ireland Women’s National Team squad to compete in FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 was confirmed on Wednesday.
The final squad, consisting of 23 players, will travel to Australia on Friday, July 7 – the day after their final preparation on home soil against France in Tallaght Stadium.
The squad selection is subject to change should any injuries occur in advance of the FIFA deadline on July 10.
Three training players will also accompany the squad for the duration of the tournament but will not be eligible for selection after the FIFA deadline.
Vera Pauw’s squad will be based in Brisbane for their time at the World Cup.The squad will be captained by Kilnamanagh midfielder Katie McCabe and includes five players who are involved with local clubs.
Defender Áine O’Gorman of Shamrock Rovers has made the cut along with teammate Abbie Larkin while defender Louise Quinn from Blessington brings plenty of experience.
Former Peamount United player Amber Barrett who was on target against Zambia last Thursday will be a key player for Ireland at the finals.
Ireland play France in a friendly next Thursday in Tallaght Stadium while they will play Australia in the opening round of the World Cup on Thursday, July 20 followed by Canada on July 26 and Nigeria on July 31.
