Locals shine at Royal College of Surgeons ceremony

MANY LOCAL graduates were amongst the total of 925 candidates who were conferred by the RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland).

Their respective undergraduate and postgraduate awards at four separate ceremonies took place over two days as part of the College’s conferring ceremonies last month.

The ceremonies were held between the College on St Stephen’s Green, Dublin and the Convention Centre in Dublin.

A number of those who graduated from the ceremonies were from our local area including Seamus Grogan from Palmerstown, who graduated with a BSc in Physiotherapy; Ciara Hughes from Newcastle, who graduated with a BSc in Pharmacy; Dr Graeme Kelly, from Rathfarmham, Co Dublin who graduated with an MSc in Leadership from RCSI; Margaret Crowley, from Lucan, who graduated with an MSc in Nursing & Midwifery, and whose son Frank (now 9 months old) was born during Margaret’s course; and Yvonne Sheppard from Clondalkin, who graduated with an MSc in Leadership from RCSI.

The first ceremony, on November 15, saw the graduation of 99 candidates from full-time undergraduate programmes, including BSc Pharmacy, BSc Physiotherapy and medicine (MB, BCh, BAO (NUI, RCSI), LRCP&SI). 101 candidates were then conferred at the Diploma, Masters and Doctoral Degree ceremony at RCSI.

The November Conferrings continued on Thursday, November 17 with two further ceremonies, for graduates from the School of Nursing & Midwifery and Masters Degree candidates. A

t this ceremony, the seventh Honorary Doctorate of RCSI was presented to Professor Áine Hyland, Emeritus Professor of Education and former Vice-President of University College Cork, who delivered an address to the graduating student body.

Congratulating all those graduating on their success, Professor Cathal Kelly Chief Executive / Registrar, RCSI said, “The November conferring ceremonies are a fitting recognition of our graduate’s accomplishments.

All of their years of hard work and dedication have come to fruition. These future healthcare and research professionals now leave RCSI, to continue on their exciting and varied career paths, all with the common goal of improving human health.

I would like to congratulate everyone who graduated on their achievements and wish them success in their careers as healthcare professionals and I look forward to seeing them back at the College as Alumni of RCSI.”
