THE BIKE lockers installed in Lucan cost just over €12,000. That’s over €1,200 per locker. The news came following a question tabled by Councillor Danny O’Brien at this month’s Lucan Area Committee meeting of Dublin County Council.

Cllr O’Brien asked the Chief Executive “for a report on the full cost to the council of the bike lockers in Lucan and the yearly cost for the management programme with bikelockers.ie. Also who has the responsibility of the upkeep of the lockers?”

The council replied that the total cost of 10 lockers including padlocks and delivery is €12,372.50.

The council stated that the lockers “are managed by Bikelockers.ie who charge a yearly fee for rental and there is no cost to the council for this service”.

The council added: “Bikelockers.ie are responsible for the upkeep of these lockers in general from their fee, but there is no maintenance contract in place with the council.

“South Dublin County Council would have responsibility for maintaining the lockers in the event of damage.

“As this is a pilot scheme we will monitor the situation in regard to their usage and will consider the viability of a maintenance contract going forward.”
