Lucan clinch Metro Trophy
LUCAN Golf Club bridged an eight-year gap since they last raised the Metropolitan Trophy after they edged out The Island GC in the two-leg final.
While they had beaten their opponents 6-3 at home in the opening leg, the Lucan side still felt they had a mountain to climb as team manager Brian Cartan explained “we were playing The Island on one of the toughest links courses in the country.

“It would be difficult for any player coming from a Parkland course, but we won three matches and that meant it was level at 9-9” he said.
This led to a three-hole matchplay play-off with the first two players heading back out, and it was John Farrell who clinched the coveted prize for Lucan.
Also on the Lucan squad were Brian Duffy, Stephen Dignam, Anthony Doody, Pat Flannery, Johnnie Finn, Joe McAuley, Gerry Hatch, Dave McGrath, Shay Carney, Noel Lally, Micko Rankin, John Hoverty and Dave Ryan.
The victory capped a tremendous campaign that started back in April when 62 teams lined out on Day One.
And this Lucan outfit made it all the way through, beating Grange GC in the last eight and a strong young Dun Laoghaire outfit in the semi finals before edging past The Island.
The fourth time that Lucan has captured the Metro title, this year’s success marked the second time that Cartan had led them to this prize having done so back in 2011.
“The club has not won a GUI pennant in those eight years so we were over the moon to win this” he told The Echo.
“They’re a great group of lads and it was their comradery that really won it for us. They’re all friends for life now” he added.
