Lucan minors topple Kilmacud to secure Camogie C’ship crown

LUCAN Sarsfields fought back from five points down at half time to land the Minor A Camogie Championship title at the expense of Kilmacud Crokes in Abbotstown on Sunday.

In conditions that oscillated between incessant downpour and glaring sun, Lucan won out 2-10 to 2-6 and made the early running with a free by Aoife Mahon opening up the scoring on the day.

Kilmacud did racket up the pressure, but failed to convert that into scores and, instead Mahon again pointed a free before Faye Murphy quickly added to this from play.

Crokes responded with two points of their own and absorbed the Lucan waves of attack through Millie Reid, Ellen Dunphy, Laura Quinn who added another point.

Crokes struck back with two goals, but Aoife Mahon responded by scoring a point from play.

Lucan upped the ante early in the second period and found the back of the net for the first time compliments of Chloe O’Connor.

The same player then set up Phoebe Shannon for a point a few minutes later that reduced the deficit to the narrowest of margins before Quinn restored parity.

Crokes continued to bombard the Lucan end, but their defence held firm while, at the other end, Mahon fired two fine long-range frees over the bar together with a point from a 45.

Kilmacud, never down for long, established an attacking pattern which earned them a point from a free. But it was looking like Lucan’s day as they fought bravely and consistently to break out with the sliotar and again Chloe O’Connor struck for a goal.

Crokes, looking to preserve their hopes of lifting the coveted prize, launched a series of sorties into the Lucan half, winning three successive frees which they directed at goal.

Again and again goalkeeper Alicia Rooney and the defensive team in front of her broke down the attacks while Dunphy struck a fine point from play after a surging run upfield.
