Lucan post office in danger of closure

THE POST Office in Dodsboro in Lucan could be closed by October, The Echo has learned.
The busy post office has been in business for over 40 years but the postmaster is due to retire in October.
Applications have been made to An Post for the tender to run the post office but it is not clear yet whether An Post intend to keep it open or to relocate it to a different location in Lucan.
The rumoured closure is part of last week’s announcement from An Post that as part of its Post Office Transformation Programme and €50m investment in the Post Office network, 161 postmasters have applied for the Company’s voluntary retirement package, resulting from the recent ground-breaking agreement with the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU).
This will result in the closure of 161 post offices out of a network of 1,111 post offices. The list of post offices closing will be issued at the end of August once the details have been confirmed with each Postmaster.
A local resident told The Echo: “We are worried that we will lose the post office. The post office has not been losing money, so there is no reason for it to close. The Postmaster is due to retire at the end of October and we don’t know what is going to happen after that.”
He added: “As it stands the Post Office serves Dodsboro and Adamstown and it would be much missed if it were to close. They could relocate it to another location in Lucan, but how would that leave people in Dodsboro and Adamstown?”
The Echo contacted An Post for a comment but they did not respond before we went to press.
