Lucan P&P 60 years swinging
THE INAUGURAL drives of the 2023 season have been made at Lucan Pitch and Putt and it’s a significant year in its history, with the club celebrating 60 years of golf.
Diamond Jubilee celebrations have already swung into action at the club, which boasts nearly 170 members, with the annual captain’s drive-in taking place on St Patrick’s Day.
The drive-in marks the beginning of the playing season in each golf club around the country and a passing of the torch of sorts, as the captains pass on their jackets to the new leaders.
Led out by Dan Coady as St Patrick, lady captain Tracy Needham and gents captain Brendan Keane took the first pitch of the year on the first hole of the course to a rapturous applause.
Club president Michael Purcell also joined the ceremonial drive in, which was attended by some 50 people and around 100 people linked in with the celebrations across the day and night.
Needham and Keane are the latest in a long line to lead the club through the years as captains.

Lucan Pitch and Putt 2023 Lady’s Captain Tracy Needham tees off
Lucan Pitch and Putt has stood as a sporting pillar in its ever-expanding community since it was founded in 1963 along the banks of the Grand Canal.
The first captain’s dinner was held in the Springfield Hotel in 1965 and major clubhouse renovations were completed in 1975.
From meagre beginnings of the small clubhouse just off the 12th Lock to one of the major clubs in the country, the pitch and putt club continues to expand its reaches.
This year, being 60 years in existence, Lucan Pitch and Putt will host a Diamond Jubilee celebration event in July but the club remembrance competition kicks off the first club major of the year on April 29.
The club strokeplay championship will follow in May followed by the Captains’ Day, President’s Day and inter county tournament over the summer months.
