Lucan U16 delight at winning Division One league title
IT WAS mission accomplished for Lucan Sarsfields U16 footballers last week when they claimed the Division One league title.
The Lucan side secured the league crown after they overcame Ballyboden St Enda’s 4-9 to 3-8 at Arthur Griffith Park in a tight contest.
Sarsfields had to dig deep in the second half after they had a player red carded and then another black carded before Boden drew level with five minutes to go.
However, in a frantic finish, a late goal from Senan Bolger and a point from Daniel Taaffe saw Lucan secure the title in superb style.
The first half of this contest was evenly matched with Michael O’Brien and Senan Bolger hammering home goals before Boden replied with two goals to leave it 2-5 to 2-3 at the interval.
Lucan seemed to be under control in the second half but losing two players at key stages put them under pressure.
Bolger, who scored two goals and two points for the winners, was a key player for the winners as was Patrick O’Connor who kicked three points to keep Sarsfields in front.
Ryan Doherty was also among the scorers for Lucan while Taaffe accounted for a goal and two points as he tormented the Boden attack throughout.
Sarsfields won seven matches from eight outings this season, only losing to Na Fianna while they overcame closest rivals St Sylvester’s in their second last game in a crucial win in Malahide.
“I’m delighted for the players, its great for the team to win Division One,” mentor John Costello told The Echo.
“It’s a big step up on the previous year, it’s a very competitive league but the lads worked hard all year and it’s great to secure the title,” he added.
Lucan now look forward to the start of the championship with the hurling campaign starting on September 2 and the hurling championship a week later.
