MacDonagh wins Champion of Champions title
LEINSTER Lawn Bowling Club’s Pat MacDonagh was crowned Ladies Lawn Bowling Champion of Champions.
Champions from 16 clubs in the greater Dublin area played in a recent knock-out competition over two weekends with MacDonagh beating fellow international Sarah Kelly in a very exciting final.
Pat MacDonagh of Leinster Lawn Bowling Club captured the Ladies Lawn Bowling Champion of Champions title.
This is the second time that she has won this prestigious trophy, marking another achievement in a distinguished lawn bowling career that started in Southern Africa and continues today in Leinster Lawn Bowling Club of which she has been a very active member since 1988.
Indeed, MacDonagh is not just a top-class lawn bowls player, but is also a great promoter of the game as mentor and coach for players of all ages in her home club in Rathmines.
She has led many teams to success in league and cup competitions over the years and has served as Club President in Leinster Lawn Bowling Club’s centenary year in 2013.
Speaking after her recent win, MacDonagh said that she has “forged deep and long-lasting friendships” in Leinster Lawn Bowling Club and recommends the sport “as a means of developing physical coordination and keeping active, adding “the value of lawn bowls as a sport which develops team spirit and camaraderie among its players as well as being one of the most social activities anyone can become involved in.”
Since those early days when she played at international level for Swaziland (1982-1987), she has been a regular on the Irish team, earning her first Irish cap in 1993 and continuing on to chalk up a further 42 until she retired from international duty.
MacDonagh has also had significant success in the annual Ladies Bowling League of Ireland competitions, and as recently as last year, won the Senior Singles event.
She was Irish Ladies Lawn Bowling Champion in 2001 and has won numerous club and tournament events over her long career.
Leinster Lawn Bowling Club, Observatory Lane, Rathmines, hosts an Open House on Sundays from 2pm to 4pm.
