By Mary Dennehy
PLANS for a mixed-use commercial extension at The Square Shopping Centre and a new public plaza has been lodged with South Dublin County Council.
The proposed development seeks permission for the construction of a 9,956sqm extension to the existing Level 2 mall on the southern side of the Tallaght shopping centre, which would include six retail units.
Plans for a mixed-use commercial extension and new public plaza has been lodged with council
It is also proposed that the extension would be home to a food hall/market hall area for multiple restaurant/food and beverage type uses and associated seating areas and a separate restaurant/café unit.
The Level 2 extension is replacing 140 surface car parking spaces at the Tallaght Bypass-side of The Square, with an existing parking area to the east of the proposed extension to be reconfigured as part of the plans.
The planning application also provides for the creation of a Level 3 entrance and new public plaza to replace the roof car park (111 spaces).
The new outdoor public plaza will be used for multi-purpose events and civic and recreational uses.
The creation of the new Level 3 entrance includes a mall with flexible kiosk type retail concession areas, two buildings accommodating nine restaurant/bar units and associated outdoor seating areas in the new plaza on south facing terraces.
The new application, lodged by Oak Square Retail Car Park Limited, ‘replaces and supersedes’ permission granted for a smaller extension development to the southern side of the centre in 2014.
At the time permission was also granted by An Bord Pleanala for a northern extension at the Luas-side of The Square.
Plans for the northern extension, which comprises of nine new retail units and a multi-storey car park, remain unchanged, according to the new planning application.
However, permission is being sought through the new application to facilitate the construction of the proposed southern extension prior to the permitted northern extension.
A council decision on the new application is due by 19 February, 2020.
