Major refurbishment works start in the Civic Theatre

By Aideen O'Flaherty

THE CIVIC Theatre will be carrying out an extensive refurbishment of the seats in their main auditorium this Easter, as a result of a grant that was awarded to them by the government as part of the Creative Ireland Programme, reports Aideen O’Flaherty.

The Tallaght-based theatre received a grant of €132,280 to carry out the work, which will see custom-built seats being installed in the 300 capacity main auditorium, which has featured performances from comedians, musicians, actors and dancers.

Hussey Seating were awarded the contract by The Civic Theatre and South Dublin County Council, after the venue and the council’s architects department worked closely together when selecting a contractor.

The new seats will be slightly wider, with a higher back and a wider seat pan, and will be finished with high quality upholstery.

The theatre’s old seating will be donated to theatre projects around the country, as Niamh Honer from The Civic explains: “We are interested in paying our good fortune forward by donating the old seats to small spaces in need of seating and also to upcycle, to make sure they are put to good use.”

Ms Honer added: “We are delighted to receive this funding to continually improve the customer experience at the Civic. We would welcome any feedback from our patrons.”

The seats will be installed over the Easter break.
