Making communities safer place to live grow and learn

PEOPLE working across childcare services in Tallaght and Whitechurch are invited to participate in a seminar, which is working towards making communities safer places for children to live, grow and learn.

Earlier this year, the Tallaght Drugs and Alcohol Task Force (TDATF), in partnership with Barnardos, launched its Next Generation research, which estimated the number of children of parents who misuse substances, including alcohol.

Next Generation Research

According to the research, which was reported on in The Echo last April, there are more than 3,000 children living in Tallaght who are at risk of being seriously affected by parental substance misuse in the home.

Since the results were released, the task force has been working towards implementing the recommendations of the report, one of which was to organise a seminar under the theme if ‘supporting the next generation’.

According to Grace Hill, co-ordinator of the TDATF: “It was hoped that such an event would provide an opportunity to support the dissemination of our research messages and foster dialogue with a wider audience on how we can better understand the needs of the next generation and work together to support them to reach their full potential.”

She added: “The seminar is aimed at any service/frontline worker interested in making the communities of Tallaght and Whitechurch safer places in which children can live, grow and learn.”

Ms Hill will provide an introduction on the day, and will be followed by an overview of the New Generation Research by Karen Galligan.

Presentations will also be given by representatives from Barnardos and the School of Psychology in Trinity College Dublin.

A round table workshop will also be held, with feedback given over lunch.

The seminar will take place on Wednesday, January 24, in the Rua Red county arts centre from 10am to 1.15pm, with tea, coffee and registration available from 9.30am.
