Sgt McManigan told Judge David McHugh that Mitchell passed all points of payment and left without paying for the items. She said the property was later recovered.

Mitchell, aged 50, with an address at Connolly Avenue, Inchicore, pleaded guilty to stealing cosmetics worth €82 from Marks & Spencer, Liffey Valley, on July 25, 2019.

Sgt McManigan said Mitchell had 14 previous convictions, all for road traffic offences.

Mitchell’s solicitor, William Cadogan, said his client had “never done anything like this before”.

Mr Cadogan said the incident had been “drink-orientated”.
