Mark’s U14 girls secure league crown
ST MARK’S U14 girls football team were celebrating at the weekend when they secured the Division Six league title.
The Springfield side have had an unbeaten run in the league and were coming off the back of their feile success earlier in the season.
The team also enjoyed league and championship wins in 2023.
They played a strong Round Towers (Lusk) side away and emerged 5-7 to 2-4 winners.
It was a slow start for the St Mark’s girls who found it hard to break down the Towers defence and had a few wides, with the half-time score 1-2 to 0-2 in the visitors favour.
The second-half was a totally different game with Mark’s finally getting going and showing their skills and talent on the ball.
Layla Murphy was instrumental for getting scores in the forward line and half-forward Carla Kelly racked up two goals in the second half when she scored from two penalties and blasted them into the back of the net past the Towers keeper.
Kiana O’Connor made several great runs on the wings at half-forward and was rewarded with two great points from past the 21 yard line.
Eve Ritchie and Holly Doyle gave it their all in the half-back line and didn’t let the Towers forward get much past them.
Others to impress were Grace Green and Abigail Byrne in midfield who tested the Tower’s defence throughout.
Saoirse Loughnane in goal made some great saves to ensure Marks didn’t concede many scores.
