THE CROWNING moment in Winnie Christina McDonagh’s young boxing career so far came in may when she captured the European Schoolgirl 63kg Championship title in Bulgaria.
The Neilstown BC star completed her march to the gold medal following a super performance that saw her earn a unanimous decision against Russia’s Alina Safina in the decider on Tuesday.

That victory came three days after she had a come through a very tough semi finals against Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad, emerging on the favourable side of a 3-2 split decision.
That achievement was made all the more remarkable given the fact that she had been struck down a bad dose of tonsillitis just prior to the decider.
After being prescribed an antibiotic, the Clondalkin girl had to do a medical a half hour before the fight and passed that.
“Usually she just goes at it, but she listened to our instructions and she controlled the fight with her boxing.”
European success came hot on the heels of her National 61kg title win in the National Stadium when she beat Laura Moran of St Anne’s in the decider.
