McGovern’s men see off champions Tralee
DBS Éanna Head Coach Darren McGovern was delighted with the performance of his players as they beat defending champions Garvey’s Tralee Warriors 87-70 in Colaiste Éanna on Saturday to remain top of the Men’s Super League table.
A blistering start by the homeside saw them lead 28-12 by the close of the first quarter and Tralee could reduce the arrears by only three by the halftime break thanks in no small part to the efforts of Stefan Zecevic, Joshua Wilson and Marko Tomic who put in a huge shift in terms of both scoring and defending.
Stefan Zecevic turned in another big performance for DBS Éanna as they beat defending Super League champions Tralee Warriors.
Warriors fought back in the third quarter with Jonathan Lawton and Kieran Donaghy stepping up to the plate, but they were unable to reel in a determined Eanna outfit that took off again in the fourth.
“That was a real benchmark for us” insisted McGovern. “It was a phenomenal performance by all the lads. Everyone contributed whether it was by getting in stops or getting scores. It was very positive and I was so proud of the team at the end of it.
“We made a lightening quick start and that suited us well. They tried to up the tempo to try and get back into it, but we were able to match that.
“They did fight back to within six points twice, but the lads kept their heads and kept their cool in what was a very physical game. We had the players who could stand up to that. It was great.
“Over the last three years they [Tralee] have won the Super League and the Champions Trophy. They have great players in that squad who have won at the highest level and they have a great coach in Pat Price. So to beat them, and beat them well was huge for us.”
Both Éanna and C&S Neptune remain the only two teams unbeaten in the league after three matches and the former will be hoping to extend that perfect start when they travel out to Clontarf on Saturday to face Pyrobel Killester in their next outing.
“We have Killester away this Saturday and it’s another one that we’re really looking forward to because they’re another powerhouse especially at home and if we can get points out of that one we’ll be delighted” said McGovern.
