Meeting to be held to discuss setting up Tallaght Tidy Towns group

A MEETING is being held to discuss the possibility of setting up a Tallaght Tidy Towns on Saturday, April 13, in Molloys, Tallaght Village - in the hope of entering the competition in 2019/2020.
Tidy Towns is a local, community-based voluntary organisation across Ireland, working to improve local community environments, and at present there are three Tidy Towns in the county – Lucan Tidy Towns, Clondalkin Tidy Towns and Palmerstown Meitheal Tidy Towns.
Tallaght Person of the Year, Gar Tyrell, has organised the meeting with Tallaght Community Council (TCC), with hopes that, if it is set up, Tallaght Tidy Towns will take on a similar role to the Clondalkin Tidy Towns, and that it will focus on maintaining and keeping Tallaght Village clean.
Gar told The Echo: “For me, from an environmental point of view, I see value in Tidy Towns.
“They’ve grown their scope in recent years, and they award points for things like how sustainable the Tidy Town is, and the impact on local biodiversity.
“Other benefits include social cohesion – it’s great for getting the community together.
“We’re hoping that the village would become a more sustainable village, and a place that local people can call their own and take more pride in.
“If there’s enough interest, we’ll start focusing on Tallaght Village and see where we go from there.
“We’ll keep our eyes open and be flexible.”
TCC is holding a coffee morning event on Saturday, April 13, at 11am in The Station, Molloys, to discuss setting up a Tidy Towns group to focus on the Tallaght village area – and all are welcome.
Niamh Carton, from South Dublin County Council, who has experience of working with Tidy Towns groups, will also be at the meeting to outline what’s involved in setting up a Tidy Town, the impact it has on areas where Tidy Towns groups operate, and she will be available to answer questions.
