Moments in time for school’s children – in a time capsule!

Holy Family National School, Rathcoole, has been working closely with the Irish Air Corps for the past twelve months on a collaborative project.

The project was initiated to mark the centenary year of 2016 and to strengthen relations between the Irish Air Corps and the local community.

In September 2016 Holy Family NS approached the Air Corp with the idea of working collaboratively on creating a time capsule. The Air Corps surpassed their commitment to the school and went beyond expectations with what they have provided.

Their engineering team, led by Sgt Ciaran Byrne, created a stand-alone rocket sculpture. This impressive rocket is made of stainless steel and is 1.5 meters tall. The rocket design was inspired by drawings made by the chidren in our school.

The rocket will also act as a timecapsule, not to be opened for 50 years. This sculpture will inspire all who see her.

The school is currently talking with the children about what artefacts should be placed inside the rocket to be sealed for 50 years. This question has been extended to the wider school community, ensuring the most comprehensive snapshot of 2017 as possible.

It is hoped  to have specific artefacts from the many different cultural groups who attend Holy Family NS, and to archive and celebrate in the capsule the harmonious cultural diversity that exists at present in the school.

The Air Corps is formally presenting the  school with the rocket on Friday, September 15, at their base in Baldonnell.

It is intended to reveal the capsule and lock the portal with a final bolt on October 25 in a special ceremony in the school.
