Mountney makes the move to St Pat’s
By Stephen Leonard
ST PATRICK’S Athletic have bolstered their ranks with the signing of midfielder John Mountney from Dundalk.
One of the most decorated players in the league, the 27-year-old has five Premier Division, three FAI Cup and three League Cup medals to his name after nine seasons with the Lilywhites.

He also played his part in some memorable European campaigns for the current FAI Cup holders that featured two runs in the group stages of the Europa League.
Mountney follows the path of former Dundalk clubmates Stephen O’Donnell and Robbie Benson, the latter having signed for the Inchicore side in 2019 after O’Donnell had taken over as Head Coach there earlier that year.
Pleased with the club’s latest acquisition, O’Donnell told stpatsfc.com “We are delighted to get the signing of John over the line. He is a player who attracted a lot of interest and when you list out his achievements and trophies won at Dundalk, he will give us a huge amount of experience.
“He is coming back off the Europa League group stages having played against Arsenal at right wing back at the Emirates. Someone with that experience, that knowhow and quality is very hard to come by.
“He can play in a variety of positions and his football intelligence is excellent too as he will know how to play in whatever position he plays in.
“He is technically a very good crosser of the ball, can play off either foot and is a supreme athlete who looks after his body well. He wants to max out his talent and wants to be the best footballer he can be.”
Mountney’s signing comes not long after the club re-signed their record league appearance holder Ian Bermingham along with Jamie Lennon while former Sligo striker Ronan Coughlan has also joined up with the Saints.
