Murphy’s Motivation

A FITNESS instructor from Clondalkin, who battled back from the brink of suicide, has produced a documentary detailing her experience with depression and anxiety in an effort to help people.

Adel Murphy (38) moved to Britain in 2016 and has been delivering inspiring mental health speeches to schoolchildren, alongside her own personal fitness business commitments.

Created with her friend Chris Newberry from Wildwood Media, the documentary ‘Path to Acceptance’ was seven months in the making.

Released last week and available on YouTube, it has generated a positive reaction amongst people who have viewed the video.

It explores Adel’s childhood experiences of bullying and other life-changing events such as her father being diagnosed with cancer, and watching her sister being resuscitated in front of her.

Adel overcame a botched suicide attempt in April 2016 when she considered crashing her car after taking sleeping tablets and alcohol.

Moving to Kent in England shortly afterwards, she turned her life around.

When The Echo met Adel in May at the Mill Shopping Centre, she was a bundle of positive energy who said her mission is to “inspire people to not give up in life.”

In 2017, The Echo covered Adel’s story, about how she had worked her way to competing, and ultimately winning a world elite muscle-model competition.

“My story is nothing compared to others, but the talk resonates with teenagers,” said Adel, who also runs buggy boot camps and is a Herbalife promoter.

“My own family didn’t know I was suicidal until they read it in The Echo [back in 2017],” said Adel in May.

“The Path to Acceptance came from my head. I found when I accepted it, it made it easier to manage better. I no longer let other people’s opinions effect what I do.”

Following the release of the documentary, Adel said she hopes to come back to visit Ireland to do some “motivational speeches in schools or organisations.”

“With mental health week approaching, it will be the perfect opportunity to get involved.”

Adel’s documentary The Path to Acceptance is available to view on YouTube.
