‘My horizons have been broadened. Truth is a big subject and one never stops learning’
Dermot Dowdall is studying for his Masters in Biblical Studies at the Priory Institute in Tallaght.
He is about to start into his second year, and freely admits that he is enjoying every moment of it.
“It’s extremely interesting studying the documents of the Second Vatican Council and to see how they are being interpreted. It’s fascinating reading them in the context of today’s world.
“I’m hoping to write my thesis on the post-truth era,” he says.
‘Post-truth’ is a phrase that one sees everywhere these days. Dermot explains the term simply and succinctly: “People are inclined to be persuaded by arguments, which may not necessarily be true but feel good.”
Dermot worked with Dublin Fire Brigade for 33 years and proudly admits that he worked in every station in the system, starting off at Tara Street and retiring from Dolphin’s Barn, where he was a District Officer.
“I am absolutely delighted I’m doing the course. I’m not an academic but it’s great to be able to keep up with the conversation when people are talking and discussing topics, including theology. I don’t have to melt into the background, instead, I can stay involved” he explains.
