National Beep Beep Day gives young children a start in learning about road safety

PRE-SCHOOL children are learning about the dangers of the road through their participation in a road safety campaign being run by the Road Safety Authority called National Beep Beep Day.

Pupils in StartBright Bawnogue Early Learning Centre will take part in a road safety education initiative this Friday, October 6 to highlight the importance of being safe traversing the roads.

This week is Road Safety Week and with the school term restarting last month, coming into the shorter days, Beep Beep Day guides young children through storybooks and a guide.

In advance of October 6, schools were able to order Beep Beep Day packs which includes special reflective vests, posters, and guides.

Children are being thought to hold hands, stop, look and listen before crossing any roadway.

Included in the guide, which is available on the Road Safety Authority (RSA) website, is the

Safe Cross Code song, along with tips on walking, cycling and taking public transport to school.

According to the RSA, around 101 children aged up to five years old were killed or seriously injured on Irish roads between 2017 and 2021.

StartBright in Bawnogue are one of many pre-primary schools taking part in National Beep Beep Day, due to the large volumes of traffic passing the service every day.

“We wanted to make sure that our children learn to safely come and go to our service, to be role models for best road safety practices and to encourage parents to follow safe practice when crossing roads too,” the pre-school told The Echo.
