Unwanted good furniture resold for NCBI charity

A FAMILY-owned furniture shop in Tallaght has partnered with the National Council for the Blind Ireland (NCBI) for an innovative project, which sees unwanted, good quality furniture sold for charity.
Furniture Designs on the Old Bawn Road has teamed up with the NCBI to solve their customers’ furniture disposal problems while supporting the charity’s shops.
Together, NCBI and Furniture Designs will collect customers’ unwanted furniture free-of-charge, with high quality, second-hand stock donated to the charity for their shops.
Furniture Designs was established in 1979 by the late Hugh McCaffrey, whose two sons Stephen and Peter took up the running of the business in 1993.
The family, which is from Old Bawn, has now partnered with NCBI in an attempt to make life easier for customers while supporting the national charity – and encouraging the reuse of products.
Stephen McCaffrey, Furniture Designs manager, said: “We are glad to be able to help a charity like NCBI who work with people with sight loss in our local community.
“This is a simple but effective way we can help our customers and benefit a great charity like the NCBI.
“Giving is not just about making a donation, it’s about making a difference.”
He added: “I think it is a good fit for us.
“A lot of our customers really care for their furniture, you’d be surprised at the quality of some of the products – and we find that a lot of our customers would like to pass their pieces of furniture on to somebody who could get use from it.”
NCBI is Ireland’s national charity for people affected by sight loss, with services including emotional support and counselling, low vision solutions, assistive technology advice and training, rehabilitation training, independent living skills, using a long cane and a Braille library.
Chris White, CEO of NCBI said: “We are delighted to partner with Furniture Designs on this new initiative.
“NCBI must raise €4 out of every €10 it spends on services, and receiving great second hand stock for our charity shops will be a huge help to the organisation.”
