New social housing expected to cut down on anti-social behaviour

PROVIDING new social houses at waste land in Clondalkin will help tackle the housing crisis, but also combat anti-social behavior at the estate, according to Labour Councillor Breeda Bonner.

The development of 18 social houses in Mayfield – off Watery Lane – is currently at tender stage.

South Dublin County Council expect construction to begin in October 2016, and be completed by November 2017.

Cllr Bonner asked the council for an update on the plans at the recent Clondalkin area committee meeting, and for a perimeter boundary to be secured to prevent scrambler and sulkie drivers breaching the estate.

Cllr Bonner said: “The sooner the better as there is such a shortage of housing. It’s a great location for housing. I’m happy the council have responded to existing residents’ requests to repair a breach in the existing fence which was allowing access to scramblers.

“Residents there will be happy when new houses are built on the waste ground. We need more of these small developments in central locations. The new Mayfield development will be a godsend to the families lucky enough to get the houses.”

A spokesperson for SDCC said: “The development at Mayfield is currently at tender stage for construction. Tender documents are being prepared by the appointed consultants and will be submitted in early July for approval to the Department of Environment Community and Local Government.

“The target for commencement of construction is October 2016. The project should be completed by November 2017. Once the contractor has been appointed for the project they will secure the site which forms part of the contract. Any repairs required in the immediate vicinity which arise during the construction stage will be carried out at that time.”
