Number of abandoned vehicles continues to increase across local estates

There has been a significant increase in the number of abandoned vehicles being left on Dublin streets and in housing estates, according to the latest figures.

In South Dublin County, the council ordered the removal of 51 vehicles to be destroyed last year, while there were no removals ordered in the previous two years, according to the Irish Times.

The reasons for the increases are unclear, but reports today suggest the plummeting scrap metal prices could be having some impact.

Over the past 12 months several residents from across the area have contacted Echo.ie to express their frustration in relation to dumped or abandoned vehicles in their estates.

Speaking to Echo.ie this time last year, a council spokesperson said: “Article 53D(2) of the Waste Management Acts 1996-2012 and Article 35 of the End of Life Vehicle Regulations, makes it an offence if the registered owner of a vehicle who decides to discard that vehicle as waste does not deposit that vehicle at an ATF.

“Non-compliance with the ELV Regulations incurs the penalties set down in Section 10 of the Waste Management Act 1996, as amended.

“In summary, a maximum fine of €4,000 can be imposed at the District Court along with a term of imprisonment not exceeding 12 months.”
